The stories that reveal the soul of Ukraine

In this article there’s a lot about Ukrainian literature and its influence on society.  I found especially interesting the lives of two people: Taras Shevchenko, seen as the national poet of Ukraine. For many Ukrainians, his poems such as “A Cherry Orchard by the House” is remainder of home- feeling of safety. And the second person- Lesya Ukrainka, who became a symbol for the women's resistance. These two aren't well known outside their country. but what surprised me the most was their impact on society- which was different than I imagined.

Reading this article, I realised I know almost nothing about Ukraine. Of course I learned about the basics- the history, the location of this country etc. But what about the society and culture? In our education we are learning about Russian literature( for example we all know Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy), which is significant to our history, but what about Ukraine? Ukraine and Russia are linked to each other more than anybody would like to admit, but it doesn’t make theirs cultures mixed. It’s important to know and remember that every country- besides history- has its culture that had impact on its people.  This article made me motivated to learn Ukraine’s culture (especially read literature) and see what are the differences between ours literature and the theirs…

  1. What we apparently don't realise is that Ukrainians are very keen readers and literature is flourishing there. And there are more and more Ukrainian books translated into Polish.
