Joy in painting: Why sadness always creeps in
"Is it possible to create a work of a pure joy?". Art shows us a little bit about life and emotions hidden in it. From saddness to happiness, these positive and negative ones. Based on "La Danse" and "Apples, Bottles and the back of a Chair" we can analyze what this painting symbolize and what artists tried to show us.
"La Danse" by Henri Matisse
It shows us a whirl in ecstasy, people dance, not caring what is going on or what they are wearing(literally). At first glance, they are holding hands, they are stuck in the feeling of lightness. We see nothing but a joy these dancers are feeling in the moment. But if we look closer, we can notice that the grip between two dancer had loosen up. Girl is going to fall, but she is to overhelmed with happiness and joy to be aware of a danger. She's still dancing, but in a second her joy will end.
"Apples, Bottle, and the Back of a Chair" by Paul Cezanne
On the painting, there are things decribed in the name of a work- apples, bottle and chair. And happy element is technique that artist used. It's called watercolours- there is little pigment and layers are thin. It makes painting feel more "airy" and "light". Yellow, bright red, and orange are cheerful colours. But we shouldn't forget what Cezanne painted. He hide a feeling of loneliess and emptyness. It's the celebration of sadness and being alone(there is one wine glass).
So is it impossible to create work of a pure joy? I think it is. But for what? A lot of people find art as a relief, because it doesn't hide a pain that we feel in everyday life- it shows it. A work, that has a message, can make us think about our feelings and emotions. It can help us cope with it. Also artists shows us their thoughts and express it on the canvas. Life is an inspiration for art.
Each of us, will interpret paintings in different way- some of us might see sadness in Cezanne's work, but some of us can see joy and celebration. And this is what makes art personal and full of questions.

To me, there's no joy in Matisse's painting: the dance looks more like trance - hypnotized people engaged in movements they can't really control. And the strong colours are pretty ominous.
