What Jane Austen can teach us about resilience

Image
Jane Austen is one of the pioneer in world literature. Her "Pride and Prejudice" is also one of the most famous book in the Europe. When I heard about her for the first time, I thought of her as a calssic romantic writer- with beautiful language and a great story. It lasted for a long time till i got "Pride and Prejudice"- which I finished in one sitting. I just couldn't get my eyes from the book- and it wasn't about romance that she wrote abou but also the vibe that the book gave me. After reading this article, I see her in much better lighting- not only as a taleneted woman but also as an excellent observer. Personally, I rode only one of her book and I watched the movie "Sense and Sensibilty", so I know what is it about. But as far as I got to know her works (or work because of one book), she was always interesting, so she was quite often on my mind. I always wanted to find an explanation what exactly I like about her, but atr first I was ...

Sylvia Plath: Will the poet always be defined by her death?

Image
When I was scrolling throught the page of the BBC Culture, I had no idea what should I write about. So I became really happy, when I noticed article about Sylvia Plath- the writer, who wrote one of my favourite books- „The Bell Jar”. The fact that Sylvia Plath commited suicide, covers her entire career. Most of the critics see her as the one who is doomed to tragedy- like if her whole life, from the beginning had only one ending. Plath became ac icon of rebellious but deppressed woman- her main character in the story, Esther Greenwood is also described in thgis way. It is even more concerning that Plath created Esther as her alter-ego. Her works are linnked in a one way or another with life and death, suffering in everyday life. She is constantly questioning the meaning of life and what people should do with it. But I noticed that if a reader is focusing on the dark side of the Plath’s book and poetry, they are missing one thing- the fact that she is also showing the little drops...

The stories that reveal the soul of Ukraine

Image
In this article there’s a lot about Ukrainian literature and its influence on society.   I found especially interesting the lives of two people: Taras Shevchenko, seen as the national poet of Ukraine. For many Ukrainians, his poems such as “A Cherry Orchard by the House” is remainder of home- feeling of safety. And the second person- Lesya Ukrainka, who became a symbol for the women's resistance. These two aren't well known outside their country. but what surprised me the most was their impact on society- which was different than I imagined.   Reading this article, I realised I know almost nothing about Ukraine. Of course I learned about the basics- the history, the location of this country etc. But what about the society and culture? In our education we are learning about Russian literature( for example we all know Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy), which is significant to our history, but what about Ukraine? Ukraine and Russia are linked to each other more than anybody wou...

Oscars 2022: How they could make history

Image
In this year two LGBT actors were nominated to get Oscar in the same year- Kristen Stewart and Ariana DeBose. In the 1900s, LGBT cinema was some kind of a fringe interest- it means that it was considered as something not interesting for the large amount of viewers. This wasn't in the mainstream. But now LGBT is in the spotlight more than ever. Even big celebrities as Angelina Jolie and Lady Gaga are the only open LGBT actor in singer, who were awarded before, so now it's different that in the Oscars 2022, Kristen Stewart and Ariana DeBose where nominated at the same time. Maybe it’s the begging of the big, unite society, where all of the people are living together- they are equal(maybe I’m being irrationally optimistic). And I think it's good. The society became more tolerative and supporting to LGBT community- we are spreading awareness of the today's problems! There’s one main disadvantage- some of the people are going to far with this “supporting”. As if somebo...

The Woman in White and the meanings hidden in a masterpiece

Image
In this article,   Beverly D’Silva is analysing colour white in paintings- especially from the James McNeill Whistler’s masterpiece- “Woman in white” from the 1861. The model was Joanna Hiffernan- and she wasn't only a muse to the artist, but also a companion. On the painting, we can see a woman in some sort of the white gown with big eyes and long, copper, hair hanging loose. A lot of the art critics were trying to find out the meaning behind colour white- masterpiece has a lot of it! The most reasonable idea was that model’s white garment is linked with the purity, morality, heaven, virginity, faith, perfection. This thesis is supported by the work   of Dante's – “The Divine Comedy”- when we were rising to heaven, it gets brighter and brighter- there's one conclusion whiteness associates with heaven and heaven associates with purity. Despite heaven, colour white is also linked with many religious as the transitional stage.   There were also another explanat...

Reflection 4

Today, I'm going to write about quarantine and online classes. A lot of young people, like me, said that they want online calesses back, because they want to rest. School is exhausthing, to sleep 6 hours a day (or less) and do a ton of homework or even to be preaper for another lesson. Now, I'm starting to worry about my matura exam. A lot of stress, a lot of tiring things everyday. And I understand that many people find it difficult, cause I find it difficult too. But I don't wanna go back on online classes for such a long time like it was in the previous year. And that's why:        When we were learning throught the computers, I had no motivation to actually study. In the back of my head, it was always thought- "I can cheat it easly, so why should I study?". I have to admit, cheating is bad, but it was easier way to get a good grade and not to overwork myself. But I was sitting in front of my computer for 6 or 8 hours a day only ...

Reflection 3

Today, I'm going to write about photos that I pinned to my wardrobe and my reflection about my and our past. Yesterday, on Saturday, I decided to clean my room- I saw an old family photoalbum which made me want to look at it and maybe reflect on my familys past? When I was turning the pages on it, I remeberded that some time ago I wanted to fill my walls with photos of me, my friend and family. So why not change this idea by adding photos of my parents when they were younger? So I did it. It took me about 3 hours but most of this time I was just looking at photos- I realized that a lot of anegdotes, which my parents told me, are making now a whole story. Finally, I can recognize my grandmas at age 30 or 40 and my parents at 18(actually, they didnt change as much but still it is nice to know who is in the picture). It's fun to know that photos on my wardrobe are older than me- some of them have 30 years! I have one, when my mother had 6 years, she was just a to...
